What are you looking to do? If you are just making end loops you don't need needles, just some #8 or 10 wire about 6' long and double it over very tightly to make a loop puller. If you are shooting mono up the hollow core to make top shots or wind-ons then yes the needles make it much easier but you could get by with simply rounding the end of the mono with 120 grit sandpaper. That's what I did before I bought a good set of needles.
