Is this a good or bad idea for a deck drain?
On one hand, keeping the water out of the cockpit using a check valve seems like a good idea. On the other hand, if the check valve clogs, it could be a dangerous condition. What is the definitive word on this?

Is this for a self bailing cockpit that has drains without scuppers above the water line? I would say install either flapper type rubber or plastic scuppers or deepening on configuration the ping pong ball style. I like the latter better in choppy conditions, seem to work a little better. They have a silicone gasket that the ball settles into when submerged and a large outflow to quickly drain the deck.

Thanks JJ, maybe I can explain it a bit better...
The self-bailing deck has one drain (maybe 1-1/2" dia) that empties into a lower well just forward of the transom. This well is always wet when anchored or drifting and dry when underway. If weight (people/fish) is added aft while the boat is stationary, water flows back to the deck. It can get a few inches deep.

similar in that the drain is on the deck (left) and it outlets just forward of the transom (second tier to right). I hope this makes sense.

I had the same problem when I had my Proline. When i was alone it was not a problem, but if i had a couple people in the back the water would come in through the scupper.

I just found a scupper plug that fit the drain and it solved the problem.
