Hey guys - Brian from Forked River here and longtime member o the forum. (bayfisher). Wanted to introduce a random idea we came up with to hopefully/possibly help our fish stocks - called garbagefish.com

The website says it all. http://www.garbagefish.com

Being a long time resident and fisherman in this area, I've become increasingly bummed by the ever stringent regulations on recreational fishermen and our fisheries such as the fluke fishery. As a fun and proactive response I've created garbagefish.com to give people a laugh and at the same time promote the awareness on how to utilize our garbage fish - sea robin - skate - dogfish - as legitimate table fare and viable fisheries. Hopefully, in time, if we can get some legs on this thing - all other fisheries will benefit. Check out the site and get a laugh and we'll be at the Lacey Elks Flea market on March 14th to give away stickers and push the idea.

Great idea Brian. I personally cooked a Sea Robin for the Mrs. kinda like chicken fingers, breaded,fried...... She loved it.
Site looks good too, might have to fly a flag now since theres one of something I can caught all the time.

As for the up and coming "Technique" page.......As far as I can tell, you can just type in fluking techniques and substitute "dogfish", "skate" or "sea robin" evertime the work "fluke" appears.

Love the site....I think it's a great idea.....

Will there be a skate, dogfish or robin category in the Barnegat Fishin' Hole tourney now??

Exactly.

Definately looking forward to adding some fun ideas to that section since we all know how to catch garbage fish, but I'm thinking some outlandish techniques. Maybe a mousetrap, loaded with a spearing, tied to a leader.

As for tourny's, we are thinking about a Garbage Fish tourny, but a guy I know from the band Ween - wikipedia them if you don't know 'em - has featured us on his fishing site. http://www.brownietroopfs.com/index.pl

Mickey's site is hilarious with some great fishing videos that you need to see. I got nothing done one day just watching them. He runs a S**t fishing tourny and we want to piggy back with him so we'll be working on that. Would be a lot of fun and we have a great local venue for the weighins/party.

Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Brian- How about a garbage fish as bait section? I've used sea robin bellies for fluke with good success. Does anyone else use garbage fish as bait?

I've always wondered if everyone harvests "good" species and throws back the "junk", doesn't that give the junk fish a lot of procreation and survival advantages? Are we hurting "good" species numbers by throwing back 100% of the "junk"?

When running low on bait ive used sea robin and dogiies for bait with pretty good success. Its not a go to bait, but it does the trick.

My first fish from the beach was a sea robin. I've got the pictures around somewhere.

Dew Jigger,

When I fished Boca Grande Florida with my steady fishing Buddies and the Reds, Snook & Trout were taking the day off...
I sent the following e-mail to Dewjigger some time ago... but when I saw that our posters were eating - what I though could be part of a trash slam - I decided not to post the following message. I thought a Bay Trash Slam, Inshore Trash Slam & an Off-Shore Trash slam could be entertaning.

The following is the e-mail I sent to Dewjigger.

"We created the "Boca Grande Trash Fish Slam" Which was 2 Lady Fish, 1 Lizzard Fish, 1 Ribbon Fish and I forget the other. If one of us caught the slam... He bought the drinks back at the Dock."

Perhaps it might be fun to create a "BarnegatFishinhole Bay Trash Slam" as well as an Inshore & Off Shore Slam - just for giggles

I don't remember that message but I had trouble with email a while ago maybe it was then. I know I lost some other emails.

Well, Garbagefish has a forum. If you guy want to run a slam deal, just set it up in there and have at in a gentlemanly fashion. I won't be running any contest this year.
Sorry.

Brian - Great idea on the site. I've got a recipe or two for you but, up until now, I didn't think to use garbage fish in the dish. I'll have to experiment and let you know what works.

The tourney needs to take place though. Looking outside the box has gotten some of the best results so lets keep this idea kicking. The best part about it, think of all the junk fish we could elimante if each person catching actually makes a meal or two out of em'. That might bump the chances of catching some game fish up a percent.

It's pretty much all I use. Lasts for days compared to bunker which you are lucky to get a day out of. Freezes well, just toss them in a 5 gallon bucket in the freezer and yank one out when needed.

Bergall and sea robin fillets both make excellent bait for fluke and sea bass, knew a few people who also eat sea robin.

Joe,

Do you use a whole sea robin in your traps or do you cut them in 1/2?

I throw the whole thing in, if it is a larger specimen (16-18") I will cut the tail off so it fits. I do score the skin a few times to allow the juices to flow.

If I need a quick fix though, a crab right away for the killie pot, I will use a piece of cut bunker on a hand line around the pillings. Have not tried sea robin for this yet.

I hear that the crushed crab in the killie trap works the best. In 07 I had all the killies I wanted in the lagoon, just using bread. In 08 I tried everything, and there were no killies to be found.

always some them when the snappers came in, unless it was different bait fish. Either way would never go in

The snappers were probably chasing spearing. This was a slow year for killies up my way also...John

I like the Boca Grande trash fish slam idea. I might have to make some flags for the southern garbage fish as we don't have lizzard fish and many lady fish up here. We are working out the details for the tournament this summer. Question. Anyone familiar with the Sunrise Beach Club - boat ramp? It's a bulkheaded pseudo beach with a nice huge pavilion and playground, located on Capstan in Forked River. Was wondering if it's deep enough by the bulkhead to get boats in there? I can get that place for a weigh in - bar-b-que - after the tourny but it would be cool to be able to come by boat.

Also - check out this write up I got in Field and Stream online.

Bay Fisher,

We even thought about having a Trash Slam Tee shirts made with pictures of the fish.
