on this job,the dimensions of the deck will not allow a single piece to be used-the deck is wider than the cap... to get full support all around,i add a 5" wide piece of 3/4" marine grade plywood, laminated and glassed over to the stringers and the bulkheads, this assures a full support on all the seams.after the ply wood is down, the seams are ground into a dish shape and these, along with the edges, are glassed with a biaxle cloth.after these areas kick, the rest of the deck is glassed,i use 3 layers of 1.5oz cloth...before the ply wood went down,it's epoxy coated on the back side.the reason i use epoxy is for waterproofing...believe it or not, polyester products are somewhat pourous,i don't use or reccomend polyester products.polyester products are the cheap products that have that whole styrene smell, there's no smell with epoxy, epoxy is also much more expensive and it takes longer to kick...anything that takes longer to kick, the bond is stronger.polyester resin over wood isn't the best approach.polyester based resins have a low absorbtion rate, meaning,it's gonna provide barley a surface bond.using epoxy based resins,it has a much better absorbtion rate...

here's some updated shots...the forward section of the cockpit deck has been glassed over.for this is use 1.5oz chop strand matting-the matt isn't needed for strength, just water proofing.after the matting kicks,it's ground down at the seams and the next section is glassed over...there's 3 layers of this matting down on the wood.the seams in the wood, these are ground into a dish shape, the area is glassed over with a good strong biaxle cloth, then it's all covered by the 3 layers of matting... the outside seams, where the deck meets the side of the hull, the white stuff,it's epoxy mixed with 403 additive, the deck is laminated onto the stringers and the perimiter,as well as being screwed down to these areas.these areas are glassed with a biaxle cloth as well, then covered in the matting.all this assures the deck is a solid piece and it will not, sag, crack or split anywhere... check it out... that's dust from grinding out everything,on the outer edge in this picture... i'll keep this going,i should be ready for paint by the end of the week...this deck is much larger than it appears-remember,this is only the front half...the cockpit is approx 8' wide and it's approx 13' long-wow !!! that's big !! there's 4 4'x8' sheets of marine grade ply on here...there's also 4g west system epoxy on this job used so far-should use 10g by the time it's all done-wow !!

not too much to post up on this rig...gonna wait till i have the entire deck glassed over... side note...i've had a few members ask me prices about jobs,i have absolutley no problem posting the price of a job...just bear in mind, this particular job, there's alot more here than you can see.this is not a quick job,it's not brain surgerey, but it's tedius and very time consuming.the materials i use are pretty expensive,to give you an idea, the material cost on this job will fall in the $3,500 range.that includes the fuel tank, the hosing, fill, vent and feed, the epoxy required to coat the underside of the wood and the epoxy required to glass the top of the core as well.it also covers the cost of what's required to fabricate a cockpit console, and again, all the fiberglass matting and misc supplies-that's alot of stuff needed huh ? i really don't like to give a price on anything without seeing it first,so,please bear this in mind. i'm heading off to the offshore rock piles tomorrow for some sea bass,so....no progress on this rig tomorrow...
