Description
Got setup at low tide, got a 10.2 pounder on a clam right away. A few minutes later i got another one about the same size on a clam, but the skin was red and the stripes looked funny so i let him free. then a little while later the bunker came in close enough to get with a snag hook so i snagged one and waited only about 10 seconds and had a fish on, he dropped it so i started to reel in and another one grabbed it 14.7 pounder. got him in and the bunker went back out before i could do it again. as the tide came in there was bunker as far as i could see out of reach but they never came back in close enough to the beach.

Thanks!

I tried to call out on 78, no answer. Then later on I heard someone else callling out twice, but they didnt answer back to me they sounded far away.

The 10 pounder had about 20 sand fleas inside and one crab claw, the 14 only had 1 bunker inside.

everytime i bring the boat with a 5 - 10 wind report, the waves get too big for my boat in the bay. then when i dont bring the boat, that same 5-10 wind report = less then 5 and no waves usually. i cant win when i bring the boat. Its kinda too small for the inlet, only 16 feet, although i have had it out a few times out of BI

i am seriously thinking about bringing an inner tube or surfboard just so i can get out a little farther to reach the bunker

Never tried it but Gulp makes a sand flea. We have however used live ones with good success.

yea i have the gulp ones, i got them to try for blackfish when i didnt feel like finding live green crabs, i didnt catch anything on them though, but the gulp green crabs tend to catch sea bass but still no blackfish on gulp yet for me, seem they only like the real thing.

I'm gonna try to find some live ones and put a few on a hook to see what happens next time i go to the beach... at least the crabs wont eat them!

I have had good success with using strips of the Gulp mussell for blackfish in the canal. The 1" crabs also work well for sea bass and fluke.

I like the 5" jerk shads on bucktails for fluke and the 7" for bass in the fall.

Dig in the sand right near the water line. You'll find them there. I used to love digging them up as a kid.

Hardwater, Why don't you come by the shop and test ride one of our Malibu Kayaks. It might be the perfect answer for some one like you...They will get you to the fish beyond the breakers and avoid the boat envy. We can set you up with a test paddle any time you'd like with no obligation to buy...John

Because you cant launch a kayak from a permit truck on IBSP. But for some unknown reason, surfers can buy a beach permit and drive on the beach and come and surf in front of you while your trying to fish and the park police don't say anything, so i guess a surfboards the way to go! idea
My friend fishes in the back with a kayak, and was on the beach one day and just put it in the sand next to the truck to get it out of the way, and the park police told him it cannot be off of the truck. The MSFV rules actually say you cant transport a boat on your permit truck while on the beach, but they dont bother you. You just cant have it off the truck.

i might come check out a kayak for the bay though

okay. plan C. is being born... my friend has a pool and one of those chairs that float. i'm gonna see if he will let me use that to launch from the surf! theyre gonna have to change the rules in that park by the time they get done with me grin
if i dont catch any fish at least I'll get some free bunker!

if i remember correctly it has 2 cup holders! If all else fails, plan D is an option: i can always put on a type III vest and wear flippers, but landing a fish can be a problem with that idea. i think im gonna get in trouble this weekend blush

Seriously... I'd avoid the floating chair as your center of gravity (near your butt) will be to high above the floats and you won't be likely to survive the first wave upright.
A better solution might be a truck inner tube rigged to fish in. There are kits for this. Several years ago they ran a competition down in FL to fish for bill fish from truck inner tubes off the surf.

You could always get a suction cup holder for the inner tube

why go through all of this craziness... why not just catch one with your bare hands while swimming? Of course, without a wetsuit is preferred... smile

Don't even mention that !!! Many years ago my father and I were surf fishing up on Cape Cod for stripers a hundred yards apart from each other and my non fishing younger brother ran into the surf in between us and caught a fluke with his bare hands. It was the only fish caught on the whole trip. He still busts me about that and it happened in 1957!!!

I read they fish like that AT NIGHT in Montauk with a wetsuit and flippers. When they hook a fish they put thier feet forward and let the fish tow them like they're on skiis. I think they call it Skishing! They are some crazy B---ards!

I went with plan D on sunday, Flippers & type III vest. but no bunker around, so i just went out to test it out, it gets me where i need to be, but i'd rather be siting on top of the water then only my head being out, its easy to cast but hard to reel back in without submerging the rod and reel, and i dont know what i would have done if i hooked into a fish. i had a few fans while i was out there, a few different trucks stopped and looked at me while i was out there, probably looking at me funny. laugh
