Description
On friday the 13th of june 2008 my son and I went to put my boat in the water for the first time of the season. A couple of days before I had the boat started so not to make a fool out of myself at the ramp and there were no problems. Anyway Jake and I stopped at the hess station for gas and the gas attendent told me they were out of gas but i could try and fill up. I was down to only 50 gallons so I went and put another 50 in for a fill. The whole time im filling I just thought with the price of gas I was getting jipped because I was getting the bottom of the barrel and when I finished they closed down the pumps. We left the station and went directly to the ramp. We backed the boat off the trailer and while my son was holding the boat i parked my truck. Than i jumped in the boat and turned the key and just like the movies the boat exploded it blew me up into the ttop and i got stitches and my son kept yelling for me to get out of the boat because i was on fire finally i snapped out of it and rolled onto the dock and into the water. My son was a hero to me that night and with all that happed i only walked away with a few stitches and no burns..God blessed me that night and thats why friday the 13th was a lucky night for me.All this happened were my Son is sitting in the first picture.

David, That's is a nice looking boat...What caused the explosion?...We all know that it was gas but, did you have a leak or vapor build up in the bildge?...Glad to see everyone is OK.....Good Luck....

Great work you did....looks like a brand new boat. More importantly, you are very lucky you were not hurt worse. More fishing days ahead of you with your son. Good luck, and try to fill us in on exactly what happened, and your steps to rebuilding this fine example of a boat.

Thanks everyone for the compliments ..I really dont know what happened but it was an outboard and there was no blower the only thing i can think of is the gas tank is concealed and a fuel line went bad under the floor as far as the boat its gone..But boats can be replaced and God spared my son Jake and my life on that night..im going to post a couple pictures of my boat that exploaded..
thanks again for the nice compliments

David :

Boat looks great and what an experience. Glad everything worked out okay.

Gotta wonder since the end of the tank at station, pushed more air / fumes into the tank ?

David....I thought it was the same boat, but you redid the whole thing. Your new boat looks fantastic! Glad it all worked out.

glad to hear you and your son are both ok,terrible...

question...
fuel tank, did you replace it idea fuel lines, were they replaced as well idea?

normally, when you see an outboard boat explode like this,it's due to the tank leaking, and the bilge pump kicking on...whalers like this are famous for fuel tank problems, due to the foam...fuel tanks have a finite life...

Jim- This is the new boat. It's not the one that exploded. Not sure what kind of boat that one was, but it was not a Whaler. Here's the link to the other thread with the pictures of the "burner": http://bhweb.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showgallery&Number=107186

Nice job on the resto!

the boat that exploaded was a 22 coastal wellcraft..i never did anything to the fuel tanks or lines it was just something that happend...anyway when i restored the whaler i put all new fuel lines in and double clamped all of them and the best part about this particular boat there is no builge so im feeling pretty safe about anything like that happening to me again...

sorry about that,i misunderstood...
the whaler, don't be led into a false sense of security regarding the fuel tank in that rig-i've replaced many a whaler tank, the foam becomes water logged, the water is trapped against the tank-corrodes terribley...
