Visit from a carrier yesterday

Description
Got a visit from the men and women defending our freedoms yesterday. There was another small boat that came very close to them and they weren't very happy about it. I didn't catch the name of the carrier but it was very impressive to see up that close. Just wish I had my camera on board, the cell phone camera did not do it justice.

We were 16-18 nm ESE from Manasquan inlet which is probably about 12-14 nm off the coast.

Never saw a Carrier up close (been within 100 yards of the Intrepid, but I was on land). Very cool.

We saw a few Navy ships over the years, some small (like 80-100 feet) and two or three submarines during fleet week in 2000. All of them are really impressive, especially when you come upon them unexpectedly.

That was probably LHD-5, the USS Bataan, an Amphibious Assault ship.

Believe it or not a Nuclear carrier, a CVN, is even bigger.

Must have been pretty coll to see it out there under way.

That does look similar. They did identified themselves as a carrier though, just didn't catch the name. When talking to them I thought it was us that was too close. When they replied they read off the name on the transom and then the registration numbers on the bow to confirm who they were speaking with and we were almost a mile away from them.

I've seen carriers on the Hudson during fleet week, up close it's hard to conceive how big they are. Just imagine one of them doing 34 knots.....

I was in California many year ago and in the staights out there, is the fleet of retired ships anchored. At that time, you could cruse right up next to them and fish (which we did). I bet you can't get too close to them now.

You get close these days and they'll be spraying a load of .50's across your bow.... and unfortunately, that's probably the appropriate response.

I believe the distance you need to maintain is is 1500' away from any military vessel.
