Description
1/1/2011- After running around with a wet transom for the past 2 seasons I started noticing the transom flexing. Time to do something about it. Not safe. Got quotes around 6k. Not in the budget. Can I do this myself? probably. Do I want to? Not really. But, what else am I going to do over the winter. After some carefull thought and discussions with the admiral I decided to go for it.

OK I know this will sound dumb ..but, what holds the wood in besides the outer fiberglass? Is it notched in on the sides and bottom?

alright, sorry

Actually, the notches in the side and bottom are cleaned out and the new wood will be installed in 2 layers of 3/4" marine plywood for a total thickmness of 1 1/2 in. Each layer will be cut to fill the entire space in the transom. Because the the hole in the outter skin will be smaller than the layers of wood to be installed, I will be cutting each layer into 3 pieces. But, staggering and scarfing the cut (joint) 4" apart on each layer , it will have the strenth of a soliid piece of wood. Then the outer skin will be bonded over the wood and the joint (cutline) will be ground down and filled back in with fiberglass and epoxy. Also, glassing over that seam in the back of the motor well that grady is famous for water intrusion. Will be way better than it was when factory new and should last longer than I or my kids will own it.

Make sure you clamp it inside to out Till the epoxy Sets. also a good Idea. When you glass her Back wrap it around the the side min 3-4 inches. Nice job getting it all Out and Cleaned.

You got a point Dave, as it is this project is way out of my league already am having allot of fun with it. Well maybe not now but in June I will.. Just dont have the time or $$$ to do anything more. My next boat will have a bracket mounted eninge or engines and a closed transom.

Gotta admit, the Ocean Pro looks really good with the Grady cosmetically.
