Was contacted by an editor at the NY Times yesterday. The guy emailed me and asked me to call him - I called him 6 hours later and found the article about garbagefish.com had already been written for Sunday (today's) paper. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/08/15/opinion/15sun4.html?_r=1&ref=todayspaper

I had a nice conversation with the editor - Lawrence Downes - who is also a fisherman, but in the article he slants downward against keeping fish for the table - and in our conversation he told me how many stripers he brought home this year. hmmm.

Not very professional that he wrote and published the article without speaking with you. I suppose the fact that he called you right before it went to press gave him the ability to say that he attempted to call you to verify the information before publishing.

Was that a "do as I say ...not as I do?"

He needs to fire his editor:

The problem no Web site can solve is the voracity of the oceans’ top predator. Go to fishing bulletin boards and blogs and you will see them, the guys who boast of massacring the stripers and the bluefish and the cod and maxing out their limits on every trip. Or go on one of the party boats that trail a slick of cigarette butts and leave no legal-size fluke behind. Add poachers to the mix, and saltwater recreational fishing can seem like an orgy of waste and depredation.

It's an interesting read considering we are painted as rude new jersey fishermen trying to convince people to decimate the sea robin population - which last i checked is unmanaged and therefor stocks are fine - meanwhile he told me on the phone about all stripers he's put on the table this year. Go figure.
