Description
Hit the Ridge this morning hoping for some bonito action with my friend for his first trip offshore. Immediately hooked up with first line in. Had constant action all day with blues and bonito on small squids, spoons, and cedar plugs. Ended up with 12 Bonito, about 25 blues (Released 10 or so), 2 nice triggerfish, a jack, 2 banded rudderfish, and a mystery fish that we released. Also saw a mahi free jumping but I guess he wasn't hungry. No tuna this trip but still a very fun day! Seas were decent but not fantastic. Back in by 12pm!

Nice job! I imagine you tried the buoy for those triggers and others?

Nice job guys. Once we broke the inlet we regretted our plan to stay inshore.

We heard you on 78, great fishing.
We were North of you in 70-90 feet of blue water, not much life, a few tuna chicks, off Belmar. Boxed 4 bonito.

Then the flat line was whammed. So violent, we could not remove the rod from the holder for a few minutes. We got smoked by some thing that hit a Clark spoon on 30lb test. Held the rod for a few more minutes and it was off. We never saw it, it was headed down.

Joe, now that I got a good look, it looks like a barrel fish. But they are usually found in very deep water with tile fish and wreck fish. No idea if juvenile fish are found in shallow water.

When asked where did we catch the fish, it's always in the same place, the lip.....

Thanks guys! Nellie...wonder what it was. Must've been some sort of tuna. JT, that's what I was thinking. Weird to catch it in shallow water!

That is a tough one. Had to use several sources and still not 100% sure but leaning toward Black Ruff

Very cool - I hadn't even heard of a Black Ruff until now.

We had 71-72 degree water with only some weeds here and there. Nice color water and a ton of bait marks.
