Description
First pic is an Atlantic Lookdown that was recnetly cast netted up in Point Pleasant. This guy would sell for over $200.00 in some pet shops. The second is a striped blenny caught in a dip net on a bulkhead on the west side of Barnegat Bay. Both fish are about 3 inches long. Both loving it in the garbage fish garage aquarium.

I seined two lookdowns? a couple summers back just south or where Forked River enters Barnegat Bay. Thought they were juvenile african pompano at the time. They were not strong swimmers and seemed to be impeded by the long fin filaments on top and bottom (dorsal and ventral). Is that an actual picture of the fish in garbage fish tank or a picture you found on internet? I'll post a picture of a juvenile african pompano for comparison.

that's a pic of him in my tank. the juveniles have the thread fin to camouflage them in the eel grass when they are young.

I've caught Lookdowns seining behind IBSP. Doesn't look like something you'd expect to find in NJ. A nice surprise indeed.

Nice addition! We caught some years ago seining off of FR, but they were a lot bigger.

One of the casino's in A.C. (Might have been Harrah's) had a tank behind the main reg. desk full of these. But that was probably 2 years ago.

Two weeks ago in the lagoon, neighbor caught what looked to be a small monkfish in the crabtrap. Is that possible or could it have been a similar species?

Most likely an oyster toadfish (aka oyster cracker).

agree with Alex. Probably wasn't a monk in there.

It's totally possible that it was a small monkfish, but definately more likely an oyster toadfish which could be easily confused with it. Monkfish are caught occasionally in the inlet and inshore so it's feasible that one came into the bay.

Speaking of oyster toadfish, was contacted by a marina in the Delaware Bay region that wants us to do a garbage fish tournament for them this year. They don't get sea robin or many dogs but get a ton of oyster toadfish which are sold to a group of distributors for $3.50 a pound. (that's wholesale). The fish go to asian markets and restaurants but he wasn't sure what they market it as. Apparently they get them in the 3-4 pound range regularly as by catch in pound nets. He says they are delicious.

Makes sense that they taste good if they're like a smaller monkfish. Delaware eh? Road Fishing Trip? grin
