You can't fix "Stupid" !

Re: i'm confused - 01/13/10 01:50 PM

I've seen this before and it will never change... some people just fall in love with a certain boat for some reason and have blinders on and wind up buying it regardless being advised against it. Love is blind I suppose.

I'm with you Jim! I think this is absolutely universal - does not matter what business you're in. I work with accounting software...there are often many ways of doing the same thing, but depending on the situation, there is usually one best way. So I'll have a customer call and ask me for the best way to do something, pay me money for my advice, not take it, then pay me later to fix the problem caused by not taking my advice. <Sigh>

Re: i'm confused - 01/13/10 04:27 PM

Same thing with Cars, been in that business reaparing them and now on the insurance side since the early 70s, have advised people not to buy a certain vehicle shown to me because of shotty repairs from big accidents they have been in, but some buy it anyway because of the money they are saving off the book price, Stupidity is Everywhere not just in boating.

re: "you gave your FREE knowlegable advice, down the road this guy going to PAY YOU or someone else for not taking your advice."

This happens to me all the time.... usually when they find out that they screwed up, they are too embarrassed to come back to me for a fix... they pay someone else. I think, like JAWZ, that if I take the time and trouble to give someone expert advice that they should listen... or at least consider it seriously, not just ignore it.

I have a situation right now with my wife's ex brother in law on a home purchase in Vegas where I said.. "do A, B and C and what ever you do don't do D and E". He ignored 4 out of 5 and has gotten bit on 3 of the 4 and is whining to me to help him fix it.

I think that when someone is very good in their field, whether it's boats, cars, mortgages or accounting software, they care (sometimes very passionately) about it. When they are asked for advice, they spend time and effort and actually care about the advice they give. For example, when asked about a particular boat, Jim could have just said, don't buy it. Instead, he most likely spent some time to try to give detailed reasons and examples to help educate the person asking and give them an understanding of why they were getting the advice they were getting. Speaking for myself, whether I am paid for my advice or not, it makes me feel dumb for caring so much when it's ignored. And almost makes me not want to care so much next time. Almost. grin

I suspect the buyer got what he thought was a "great" deal..For most people, asking for advice is like asking someone "how are you doing?", They really dont want to know the answer..I am with Jawz 100% on this. Rich

Rather, they want to hear how smart they are and what a great deal they found.... and ignore everything to the contrary.

Jawz

I'm seriously considering the 38 Out Island which is a popular fishing boat in the Cape May area. Do you have any experience or opinions on this boat? The good, bad, and ugly. This boat is at the top of my choices, but I'm unfamiliar with this manufacturer. Any input would be appreciated. Feel free to send me a private message if you prefer.

Thanks in advance.

Don't shoot the messenger here, just relaying second hand info that I have been told about them...depending on what power is in them...and the guys who complained about it had Yanmars is that the way the air boxes are set up unless you can back down the throttles to get the turbos to disengage the whine is really, really loud when running.

Nice looking boats though, always like the lines on them.

Re: i'm confused - 01/15/10 07:56 AM

Thanks all for the info. Jawz I'll be interested in your friends feedback. The only negative information I've found on the Out Island is that on the older models water would run off the hard top and hit the operator while under way. Some say this has been repaired, but I'm not sure.
