Description
Well after getting estimates and talking to the marina staff, my surveyor and friends it just doesn't make sense financially for me or the insurance company to fix her. Labor alone was estimated at over $80k and that is if when several areas are opened up there are no surprises.

I guess there is always a silver lining though. In helping a friend with his boat and talking to the broker I use, Ed & Ken at Shore Point Yacht Sales I decided to take a look at a 1984 36' Hatteras they have listed. What a gorgeous boat, looks like it just came out of the showroom. I remember seeing the listing a year ago and she was out of my price range but this year I guess things changed for the seller and she was within reach. Will hopefully do the survey and sea trial next week.

Joe,

Hatteras owners web site can be very helpful if the deal works out. Gas or Diesel? Hatteras used fiberglass tanks and the older ones are not compatible with ethanol. Not sure what year is ok.

Good luck with the new boat.

Thanks Butch, yeah they are great.

Bill, it's an '84 with fiberglass tanks. She has 6-71 Detroit's though so no worries.

HOLY SMOKES!!!! 80K in labor?!?!? You have got to be kidding me...at 200 an hour(which is alot in the marine buisness)thats 400 hours of labor!!!...10 weeks of work??? REALLY?? Ive seen tons of trashed boats since the storm, and that pic above looks like a new boat...What happened that caused that much/kind damage???

The boat above is the one I am trying to buy, not the old one. The 80k in labor was calculated at $105/hr I believe.

This is her resting in the pile.

Basically she needed new running gear starboard side, some on the port side, cosmetic damage around the entire hull, hull painted, hole in starboard bow from cement block repaired (this requires almost the entire salon to be removed), gouges in the bottom repaired, bulkhead and stringer damage from sitting twisted in a pile of boats, tower is twisted from sitting twisted in the pile, port lifting rail was damaged and also caused damage to the hull that would have to be repaired. Not to mention having to rebuild Turbos and possibly more motor work depending how much water got in through the exhaust and how far up into the motors it got. Plus all the minor stuff that adds up like antennas, outrigger cables, spreader lights, louvers, port lights.

I will NEVER come out for a storm again... boats belong in the water!

Joe, I know what you mean about not coming out of the water. I would have been fine except the port pile pulled and then the surge recked havoc.

Yeah there wasn't too much safe haven up in Shark River unfortunately. I heard they think that 20 foot waves came rolling through the inlet and up the river so the surge must have been incredible since there isn't really anything to stop it there.

The sea trial and survey went well. Better than expected speed and economy with her full of fuel and four guys aboard. Hope to close soon on her and then the spring can't come fast enough.

I also attached a couple more pictures at the top of this thread.

Thanks. Just finally got all the insurance BS squared away and will hopefully close next week depending on how Christmas screws with the mail and timing for everything.

Hey Joe,
Good luck with the new boat, it looks beautiful. Kenny and Ed are great people. I have bought two boats through them and I go back to Bob Massey yacht sales with them. Is the boat at their marina?

Man what an ordeal. I thought the insurance BS was wrapped up, only got it finalized this past Wednesday. Anyway...closed today, should get the bottom touched up next week, get the running gear cleaned and painted and hopefully waxed during that short stretch or warm weather that is coming. Then its another month to get all the little odds and ends squared away and March 2nd will be here before you know it...can't wait to get back in the water.

I agree "I will NEVER come out for a storm again...boats belong in the water!" I believe they belong in the water also Joe. Sorry to read about the damage your girl received from the storm...Good luck in finding your new replacement...
