Paul, that was what I have been using, though you end up with having to deal with the planer being in the water when landing a fish unless someone gets it out of the way. The planer on the main line of the rod would accomplish this more simply as I see it since you can remove it as the fish is being brought in. Once the fish hits the planer is tripped so its not engaged during the fight. Only drawback is the beef needed by the rod, reel and the main line to handle the planer. Will experiment and see how it goes.
