Oh, so you are saying you unclip the planer from the line. I thought you had a dedicated planer rod. and then off the line have a downrigger release clip. That was what I meant the spliced loops are for. That way you could move them up and down the line to whatever depth you wanted or spaced out however far above ad below the other clips if that makes sense.

I've haven't used a planer (yet)...but plan to soon enough. I've read up on them and from what I understand you would use something in the area of 100# mono for the planer and secure it to the the boat - to an aft cleat. Then attach the line to the release clip of the planer after feeding out the bait/lure...similar to the way a down rigger would work...am I correct...?

Paul, that was what I have been using, though you end up with having to deal with the planer being in the water when landing a fish unless someone gets it out of the way. The planer on the main line of the rod would accomplish this more simply as I see it since you can remove it as the fish is being brought in. Once the fish hits the planer is tripped so its not engaged during the fight. Only drawback is the beef needed by the rod, reel and the main line to handle the planer. Will experiment and see how it goes.
